The current landscape of school-based mental health services is facing a “perfect storm.” While student needs are rising, schools are battling inadequate funding, severe provider shortages, and a reactive system that often only reaches students once they are in crisis.
At Erika’s Lighthouse, we believe that every student deserves good mental health. Thanks to our donors, we are directly tackling the most significant barriers identified in the national mental health landscape.

Inadequate funding is the primary hurdle for schools, with over half of public schools citing it as a major limitation. As federal grants freeze or expire, districts are often forced to choose between academic programs and mental health support.
The Erika’s Lighthouse Solution: We bypass these budgetary constraints by offering our entire suite of programs 100% free. Because we are donor-funded, we can provide high-quality depression education and suicide prevention curriculum to any school, anywhere, at no cost to the district.
Many schools fail to meet recommended ratios for counselors and psychologists, leaving administrators feeling dangerously understaffed.
The Erika’s Lighthouse Solution: Rather than requiring schools to hire more specialized clinicians to lead every initiative, we build capacity from within:
Peer-to-Peer Empowerment: Our Empowerment Clubs utilize students as a force multiplier, fostering a positive school climate through student-led messaging.
Most school services are reactive, such as one-on-one counseling. Unfortunately, this means many students fall through the cracks until they are in a high-risk state.
The Erika’s Lighthouse Solution: We advocate that “Depression Education is Suicide Prevention”. Our “upstream,” Tier-1 programs impact every student in a classroom, equipping them with the vocabulary to recognize signs and symptoms in themselves and their peers before suicidal ideation occurs.
Teachers are the front line, yet they often face burnout and lack the confidence to handle heavy mental health conversations.
The Erika’s Lighthouse Solution: Our Policy & Staff Training pillar provides educators with the materials and empathy needed to navigate these challenges without adding to their workload. We equip staff to be “trusted adults” who can guide students toward help effectively.
Disparities in access to care remain a significant issue, with students from historically marginalized communities often receiving fewer mental health services than their peers.
The Erika’s Lighthouse Solution: Erika’s Lighthouse is committed to equitable action. All our materials are customizable and available in both English and Spanish. By removing the cost barrier entirely, we ensure that a student’s zip code or a school’s budget never determines their access to life-saving mental health education.
